Technique of the Month

Quilting seems to be making come-back these days. Share your love of quilting with someone with this quick and easy patchwork technique. It is a perfect way to make a 5-1/4" x 5-1/4" card to slip inside a 5-1/2" x 5-1/2" envelope.
Select 2 designs from your favorite Designer Series paper and 2 or 3 solid card stock colors to coordinate. Die cut a large scallop square from one of the solid colors and a 5" square from another solid. Cut a 3-3/4" square from one print and cut (or punch) 4 each 1-1/4" squares from the second print. Cut a wedge from each of the small squares. (Tip: cut a chipboard square 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" and draw an "X" on it from corner to corner. Cut out one section and use this as a pattern to make your 4 quilt shapes.)
Layer and adhere the 5" square, then the scallop square, then the 3-3/4" patterned square, then the four smaller pieces. Pierce holes all around the outside edge and also on the inside square and "connect the dots" with a white gel pen or the fine tip of a marker. Alternately, you can use a sewing machine and real stitches.
Embellish as desired. If you want your patchwork piece on a card, fold a piece of card stock 5-1/2" x 11" in half and adhere patchwork piece to the folded cord. Add a greeting if desired. This piece could also be used on a scrapbook page or home décor piece.

Play Time Scrapbook Page
Here is an 8 x 8 scrapbook page capturing playtime. Do you ever dress the kids to match our cardstock?

The choice of vibrant colours and the stamp set "Awash with Flowers' are an indicator of the 'time of year' even if it's not noted on the scrapbook page. You don't need the date or child's age on every page if it is one of many pages.
Stamps: 117062 Awash with Flowers
Ink: 115656 Melon Mambo, 115659 Crushed Curry, 105210, Elegant Eggplant, 102277 Old Olive, 105394 Stampin' Write Journaler
Cardstock: 100730 Whisper White, 2-1/2" x 7-3/4" 105126 Elegant Eggplant, 7-3/4"" X 7-3/4" 100702 Old Olive, 8" x 8" 115320 Melon Mambo, 4-3/4" x 4-3/4" adjust as needed for photo size 115319 Crushed Curry, 1-1/2" x 3"
Accessories: 115614 Crushed Curry Polka-Dot Grosgrain Ribbon, 9-1/2" 115611 Melon Mambo Polka-Dot Ribbon, 111368 Old Olive Grosgrain Ribbon, 2 pcs. 3" long 114300 Sticky pages (for flower base) 112004 1-3/4" Circle Punch 107590 Designer Label Punch 103305 Dotto Adhesive 104332 SNAIL Adhesive
DIRECTIONS
1. Stamp flowers randomly on Whisper White cardstock as shown in picture, trying to work in 'threes' where possible. Be sure to pick up plenty of ink on your stamp in order to make a good impression.
2. Add stems with Basic Grey Classic Ink. Add leaves with Old Olive Classic Ink
3. Mount Whisper White cardstock onto the bottom portion of Elegant Eggplant keeping three edges even.
4. Wrap Crushed Curry ribbon across the front and tack onto the back side only.
5. Mount this assembly (Elegant Eggplant, Whisper White and ribbon) onto Old Olive cardstock making sure that the four edges are evenly spaced.
6. Mount photo onto Melon Mambo cardstock. Remember to adjust the size of cardstock for the photo you are choosing.
7. Punch Crushed Curry cardstock with Designer Label Punch.
8. Journal on one side of the tag and adhere under the Melon Mambo cardstock as shown.
Directions for Ribbon Flower:
1. Punch a 1-3/4" circle from Sticky Paper® or use a sticky flower or even an alphabet letter from another package. You won't see the shape underneath, you just want a really sticky surface. Don't remove any flowers centres - you'll need that to be sticky too.
2. With your Melon Mambo ribbon still on the reel (or cut off about 2'), twist one end tightly and adhere it to the centre of your sticky shape.
3. Twist the next little bit of ribbon and make contact again with the sticky surface, twist the next little bit, tacky it down to the sticky surface and continue in this fashion until the circle is complete.
4. To finish it off, tuck the tail end of the ribbon to the back side of the circle and adhere with a glue dot.
5. For the leaves - tack the Old Olive ribbon with a Dotto Adhesive. You want it to look like the breast cancer support ribbon, just one side folded over the other.
6. Use Dotto Adhesive once again to adhere the leaves to the back of the flower and then add it to your page. |
